Advanced PowerPoint for Teachers (2010)
  Designed for teachers who have mastered the basics of creating PowerPoint slideshows, this class helps participants improve their personal productivity with advanced features of this broadly-available communication tool. Using UEN resources found in eMedia, Soundzabound and on UEN’s Netsafe Utah site, participants create learning objects, self-running shows and more while reflecting on the potential of PowerPoint to enhance classroom instruction.

Class Projects w/Photoshop Elements
  Designed for educators who have taken UEN’s Digital Cameras in the Classroom course, this workshop delves into advanced photo editing for classroom projects using Adobe Photoshop Elements. Participants learn how to edit digital photos on the pixel level and use layers and filters to create images for professional quality print materials such as class project brochures, handouts, and printable school promotional items. Most importantly, participants consider how advanced photo editing can help engage students in the curriculum through project-based learning.

Classroom Assessment w/Technology
  This six-week online workshop introduces educators to numerous ways in which technology can support classroom assessment. Participants find, design and incorporate assessments into their daily teaching practices using UEN’s Rubric Tool, UTIPS and UEN’s Lesson Plan tool. They also review concepts including formative assessment, performance assessment and backwards design while exploring tools for designing quizzes, rubrics and electronic portfolios. Throughout the workshop, each participant reshapes an existing curriculum unit using the tools and concepts covered by the course.

Classroom Podcasts w/UEN Resources
  Producing audio and video podcasts challenges students to demonstrate content knowledge while developing skills such as critical thinking, storytelling, collaboration, technology and more. This course helps teachers explore the instructional potential of audio and video podcasting as they plan, create and share their own. In addition to hands on experience with podcasting, participants learn how to find UEN multimedia resources and reflect on how project-based learning can deepen student engagement and understanding.

Community Mapping (CMaP) Workshop
  In this five-day workshop, educators learn how to design community-based mapping projects that engage students, align with core standards and work within existing curricula. Participants learn the fundamentals of project-based learning within the CMaP framework and how to enhance projects with educational technology while experiencing firsthand how effective project-based learning can be.

Workshop costs $50:

Create Online Educational Media
  This course helps teachers find and create digital learning objects to support student learning using resources from UEN’s Pioneer Online Library, eMedia, my.uen and more. Participants practice 21st Century skills such as creating mashups, virtual pop-up books, educational interactives and more while exploring strategies for integrating digital media in ways that can increase student engagement and positive learning outcomes. Special emphasis is placed on the ethical use of source material.

Differentiating for Learning Styles
  Educators in the classroom know that individuals have diverse strengths, backgrounds and approaches to learning. This six-week online class presents web-based resources to strengthen participants’ understanding of the differences in learning styles and how to differentiate instruction accordingly. Participants gain familiarity with teaching strategies and tools targeted for each learning style and intelligence (from Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences) and work with UEN’s extensive resources to develop a lesson that incorporates those strategies and tools.

Digital Camera in the Classroom
  This workshop introduces teachers to the use of digital cameras to enhance student learning. Participants learn basic skills in taking and editing digital photos while exploring how digital photography can be integrated into project-based lessons that engage students in curricula. In addition to gaining hands-on experience with digital cameras and free software for photo editing, participants create a multimedia project they can use in the classroom.

Digital Storytelling
  Building narratives using digital media engages students in higher level writing skills while firing up their creativity and enthusiasm for learning. This online course helps teachers apply this powerful approach based on principles described in Bernajean Porter’s Digitales: The Art of Telling Digital Stories. Participants gain hands-on experience crafting their own digital stories and develop a lesson integrating a digital storytelling project with relevant areas of the Utah core standards.

Digital Video Projects in the Classroom
  The video production process can be a powerful learning tool for 21st century students. Through this course, teachers learn essential skills for teaching video production to students in a project-based framework while using Adobe Premiere Elements to edit projects developed in class. Topics include visual storytelling basics, storyboarding, live-action shooting and ideas for projects that stretch students’ creativity. Participants explore UEN’s Pioneer Library and other resources for student projects, learn about copyright guidelines and create lesson plans that incorporate digital video.

Digital Video with iMovie ('11)
  The process of video production can be a powerful learning tool for 21st century students. Through this two-day course, teachers learn essential skills for teaching video production to students in a project-based framework. Using iMovie as a platform, participants learn visual storytelling basics, storyboarding, live-action shooting and ideas for projects that stretch students’ creativity. Participants explore UEN’s Pioneer Library and other resources for student projects, learn about copyright guidelines and create lesson plans that incorporate digital video.

Dreamweaver Part 1 ONLINE
  Designing a website engages critical thinking skills and can result in improved communication. This online version of “Dreamweaver Part 1” introduces teachers to the basics of creating a classroom website using Dreamweaver. Topics covered include Internet browser functions, transferring files to a server, HTML and using basic Dreamweaver functions to build a simple website with text, graphics, links and multiple pages as well as tips for designing and using a website to enhance educational goals. Participants gain skills and strategies for identifying and solving an information design problem that they can share with students for project-based learning.

Dreamweaver Part 2 ONLINE
  Part 2 of UEN’s Dreamweaver course series focuses on creating and editing graphics to support effective communication between schools and families via websites. Building on skills learned in Part 1, participants learn how to enhance websites with buttons, text, fills and live effects as well as edit digital photographs and optimize graphics for faster downloading of web pages. In addition to hands-on experience working with graphics, participants also consider how the visual aspects of information design such as images and layout can impact the user’s experience.

Dreamweaver Part 3 ONLINE
  Participants in this 6-week ONLINE course build on previous Dreamweaver experience and learn the fundamentals of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for content formatting and site layout. Other topics include: how to add forms for collecting visitor feedback, build fly-out menus, add user interactivity, add multimedia elements and develop templates. We encourage everyone to work on a "real-world" project and bring files and materials they plan to use.

Effective Teaching with Visual Media
  This course is for teachers who want to learn how to enhance student learning with educational technology and media. Participants explore eMedia, Utah ITV, Thinkfinity and other online resources; create virtual tours and presentations; and learn strategies for helping students develop visual literacy and critical thinking skills.

Excel for Teachers (2010)
  This course focuses on helping classroom teachers, counselors and administrators who are new to Excel organize and understand data through the use of the popular spreadsheet software Excel. Using UEN’s Pioneer Library resources, participants learn to sort, filter, chart and format information while learning strategies for integrating Excel into learning activities that help students practice critical thinking skills.

Google for Educators
  This course is designed to help teachers increase student communication and critical thinking skills by incorporating Google tools into educational projects. In addition to modeling experiential learning, the course guides participants through Google Advanced Search, Docs, Calendar, Groups, Video, and more and includes discussion and brainstorming specifically to help teachers make the most of the educational potential of these free and widely accessible online tools.

Google Tools Online
  This six-week online course helps teachers tap the educational potential of Google tools. Participants go beyond the basic Google search with advanced searching and hands-on practice with Google Earth, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Picasa and more. Along the way, they explore strategies for using Google tools to challenge and engage students and improve parent-student-teacher communication.

iLife Projects ('11)
  With the iLife suite of software tools, teachers can use their Apple/Mac computers to create and assign innovative multimedia projects that engage students and inspire learning. In this two-day course, participants learn how to create podcasts, record and edit interviews, organize and share photos, build narrated slideshows and more. Teachers will learn to integrate these projects into their classroom to make curriculum real, rich and relevant. NOTE: This is a MAC-ONLY class, as iLife is not available for Windows computers."

Instructional Approaches for ELL
  This online workshop helps teachers integrate educational technology with strategies for teaching students whose native language is not English. Participants learn about second language acquisition theory, English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards and how technologies such as Voki.com and Quizlet can improve access of curriculum for all students. Additionally, they use the UEN Lesson Plan and Rubric tools to design lessons for students.

Internet Safety for Educators
  This six-week online class helps educators guide students through safe use of computers and mobile devices for educational and social purposes. Participants gain strategies for protecting their students from online criminals, cyber-bullies, inappropriate texting and digital photos, and more. At least three hours a week for course activities is expected for success.

Make the Most of your Mac
  Designed to help educators with little or no Mac experience take advantage of the time-saving potential of their computers, this course covers tips and tricks for improving personal productivity through effective use of a Mac. Topics covered include customizing features, managing files, using Mac widgets, using the iLife suite and more. Participants also gain familiarity with productivity tools including flash drives, virus protection software, online tutorials and online resources such as Pioneer Library while exploring the educational potential of their computers.

Mapping your World w/GPS
  This workshop helps teachers increase student engagement with cross-curricular project-based lessons that use geospatial learning tools such as Global Positioning System (GPS) devices and Google Earth. In addition to gaining familiarity with several geospatial learning tools, participants engage in a sample lesson, create projects they can use with their own students and consider how project-based learning with educational technology can challenge students to reach higher levels of thinking.

MS Office Week (PowerPoint, Excel, Word)
  Designed with classroom use in mind, this course offers introductory training on Excel and PowerPoint with some tips for maximizing your use of Word. Participants accumulate a “portfolio” of instructional plans that include sample student assignments or products created with Office software for use in the classroom. Software skills are presented in a context of strategies for effective educational application, and many examples of project-based learning and constructivist teaching are included. Together, participants discuss and explore all aspects of the learning process from setting the stage for learning through assessing students’ understanding. We encourage participants to come with core standards on which to base their instructional plans, and to incorporate critical thinking strategies and Internet resources along with the Office products in their activities.

my.uen for Web-enhanced Classrooms
  UEN’s portal for educators, my.uen, includes several web publishing tools that help teachers quickly and easily integrate online resources into their classrooms. In this fully online course, each participant uses my.uen to develop a teacher web page with a collection of relevant educational web links and shares strategies for effective use of online resources in teaching.

Pioneer Library: Preschool & Elementary
  This 6-week online class is designed to help preschool and elementary teachers and library media specialists effectively use the wealth of information resources in Pioneer, Utah’s Online Library to enrich their teaching and students’ learning. The course guides participants through using the many databases of newspapers, journals and magazines as well as encyclopedias, videos, music collections and more. Each week participants add on to a resource list, as well as explore project-based learning activities and effective research strategies that ensure students benefit from Pioneer resources as well.

Pioneer Library: Secondary Grades
  This six-week online class is designed for teachers of junior high and high school and library media specialists who want to design effective research projects for their students. Throughout the course, participants develop their own research projects using the Utah library media core six-step process for solving information problems and Pioneer Online Library’s wealth of resources.

Pioneer Online Library: Research & Resources
 

This course guides K–12 teachers and library media specialists through the hundreds of thousands of digital resources licensed for educational use by Utah educators and learners. In addition to gaining familiarity with online databases included in Pioneer Online Library, participants practice applying the Utah library media core curriculum’s six-step process for information problem-solving while sharing ideas for incorporating research and multimedia resources into lessons and projects for students.


Pioneer: Library Resources, Multimedia & More
 

Pioneer, Utah’s Online Library is the place to go for credible, academic resources from such well known names as WorldBook and CultureGrams. In this intensive 6-week class, you will learn not only what is available, why Pioneer resources are different from the wild Web and how to navigate the various products, but also get great ideas for ways to improve your professional practice and guide students as they develop skills in media literacy and research for the 21st century.

*Please be aware that Pioneer library online resources are licensed/purchased for use by Utah educators, students and their parents only.


PowerPoint for Teachers (2010)
  This class helps teachers improve their 21st century communication skills and personal productivity using the widely-licensed software, PowerPoint. Working with content from the UEN NetSafe Utah website, participants create a model slideshow then apply the skills learned to create a multimedia, slideshow-enhanced lesson to engage their students in a specific curricular area. In addition to sharing ideas about how PowerPoint can be an educational tool, participants learn how to use images, video, SmartArt, charts and sounds found in UEN’s eMedia and Pioneer Online Library. Participants also engage in rubric-based project evaluations and discuss strategies for assessment of multimedia projects.

Project-based Learning: Transform your Class
  In this workshop participants become familiar with the principles of Project-Based Learning (PBL) and strategies for implementing PBL projects in their classrooms. Throughout this six-week workshop, participants analyze, critique and evaluate exemplary projects. They gain hands-on experience developing collaborative, inquiry-based projects that support curriculum goals. Participants learn to blend PBL and standards-based design strategies to create curriculum units that enhance student learning. Each participant leaves the online workshop with a detailed plan for a PBL project.

Six Technology Projects (STP)
  This six-week online course introduces participants to a variety of tools and resources for boosting student engagement and personal productivity via projects that use educational technology (ed-tech). Participants view select episodes of UEN’s Faculty Lounge, a weekly ed-tech program for educators, and explore ways to integrate the following into their teaching and classroom management practices: UEN Web Resources, Digital Video, Digital Photography, Web 2.0/Online Tools, Web Publishing and Office Productivity Tools.

Teach and Learn w/Web 2.0
  The Internet has evolved to facilitate interaction and collaboration. This six-week course helps teachers harness the power of this new Internet—called “Web 2.0” by some—to build Personal Learning Networks and enhance instruction with current communication tools and strategies. Participants gain hands on experience with my.uen, blogs, wikis, bookmarks, social networks and more while learning how to effectively integrate these online tools into their curricula.

Teach Online with Canvas LMS
 

Designed for teachers of grades 7-12 with recent classroom experience, this course focuses on learning to use the Canvas learning management system (LMS) along with important strategies for appropriately incorporating the LMS tools into teaching and learning online. Participants learn how to use assignment, discussion and content creation tools available within Canvas to run a fully online course or support their face-to-face classroom.

*Please note that the Canvas LMS is designed to be licensed and implemented on a school or district-wide basis. It is not “end-user” or “consumer” software appropriate for individuals to use at home or for a single classroom in a school. Several Utah districts have licensed it and quite a few more are looking to do so in the next year. UEN will provide demo accounts under our license for people to use during class.


Teaching and Learning with iPads (BYOD)
  iPads have emerged as a powerful tool for engaging students in curriculum-related tasks. This two-day "Bring Your Own Device" workshop is designed to help educators effectively integrate this technology into a project-based educational framework. Participants gain experience using iPads, evaluating applications (apps) for educational use and exploring strategies for teaching with this technology. Additional topics include finding free educational media from UEN’s educator apps library, eMedia and iTunes U.

Teaching with Digital Video
  This six-week online course provides teachers a variety of research-based strategies for enhancing their lessons with digital video. Participants explore several sources for educational video including UEN’s eMedia, plan lessons and activities incorporating digital video resources, and learn how to apply graphic organizers, guided viewing and other strategies to increase student learning, comprehension and critical thinking.

Technology Projects for Science
  This six-week online course helps teachers use education technology to engage students in learning science concepts aligned with Utah standards. Each week, participants gain an improved understanding of a different standard of the core curriculum as they explore relevant online resources and technology-related projects. Developed in partnership with the Utah State Office of Education science curriculum specialist. NOTE: This is an intensive two-credit course requiring SIX HOURS of work each week for successful completion.

Technology to Improve Student Research
  In this online workshop, educators learn strategies for teaching students how to use technology to plan, develop and finalize research papers. Participants gain familiarity with online tools for research projects, strategies for finding and evaluating online information, tips for discouraging “copy-paste plagiarism” and how to use the I-Search framework, an innovative, multimedia alternative to the traditional research paper. By the end of the course, participants create engaging, technology-rich research units around themes of their choice.

The Interactive Technology Classroom
  This one-day class is designed to help teachers use interactive whiteboards and related tools to increase student engagement in learning. Class begins with basic use of an interactive whiteboard from accessing ready-made lessons and resources to getting comfortable interacting with the board. By the end of the day, participants create their own simple but engaging activities incorporating resources from UEN and Pioneer Library. UEN has one Promethean and one SMART brand board available for practice in class, but most of the strategies and course activities shown can apply to any interactive whiteboard. (NOTE: College credit is not available for this “points-only” class due to its short duration.)

  This 8-week workshop is designed to help secondary teachers learn more about teaching American literature in its historical and cultural context by pairing cultural, political, and religious artifacts with works of literature.   Designed for elementary teachers, this 8-week workshop explores some of the bedrock science concepts in today’s standards-based curricula.   Designed for K–12 educators of all subjects, this 8-week workshop helps participants examine the most efficient and productive learning environments for elementary and secondary school students. UEN-TV: Looking at Learning...Part 2
  Designed for K–12 educators of all subjects, this 8-week workshop helps participants examine existing theories about how children learn. Participants will also explore their own belief systems and analyze how those beliefs might influence their teaching. UEN-TV: Mathematics Illuminated
  Designed for secondary mathematics teachers, this 8-week workshop explores major themes in the field of mathematics, from mankind’s earliest study of prime numbers to the cutting edge mathematics used to reveal the shape of the universe. (Due to the high-level math concepts addressed, this class requires a substantial math background for success.)

Web Publishing w/MY.UEN
  A classroom website can serve as a one-stop location for handouts, links, a class calendar, and more. Designed for teachers who want to take advantage of the Internet to support efficient, effective communication with students and parents, but lack the time or skill to build a site from scratch, this course steps participants through creating websites using my.uen’s web publishing tool for Utah teachers and Weebly, a free resource for student web projects.

WebQuests
  A well-designed WebQuest challenges learners to analyze, synthesize and evaluate information, not just find it. This six-week online course shows teachers how to create effective inquiry-based lessons with WebQuests based on educational technology expert Bernie Dodge’s original model. Participants gain step-by-step instruction in planning, developing and sharing a WebQuest they can use with their students. UEN resources and tools are incorporated through the webquest process providing a great foundation for student research and even publishing of the final products.

  Computers are an essential tool for education in the 21st Century. This course is designed to help teachers with little or no computer experience gain skills that can save them time, improve communication with students and parents, connect with colleagues and give them access to a wealth of resources that can enhance their teaching including Pioneer Online Library. It focuses on computers that use a Microsoft Windows platform and takes participants from keyboard shortcuts and file management through virus protection and creating online tutorials.
