Description:
This course will guide learners through a quality televised workshop from the Annenberg Foundation, with an online reflective component concerning educational issues. This particular workshop aims to improve civic education across the nation for grades 9-12 through professional development of civics teachers. Each of the eight programs presents authentic teachers in diverse school settings modeling a variety of teaching techniques and best practices. These methodologies are applied to a variety of social studies courses from a 9th -grade government/civics/economics course to a 12th-grade law course.

Pre-requisites:
Participants need to have regular access to the Internet. Basic computer and Internet skills are helpful.

• Improve teaching techniques and skills in civics using pedagogically proven methods.
• Participate in a reflective online component using WebCT.
• Create and implement a lesson plan utilizing these new techniques and skills.

Assignment:
For points only, complete weekly reading, writing and discussion activities defined in the online course materials.

For credit, participants complete the weekly assignments and must ALSO complete a final project. For the required project, participants create a presentation based on an individual classroom project that demonstrates one concrete way in which they have implemented workshop concepts and strategies in the classroom.

1. Participant submits a multimedia presentation (power point, digital photos, digital video, etc.) that effectively illustrates the classroom activity. If not currently a classroom teacher, modify the project as appropriate. For example, a parent may work with his or her own children or with a small group of students in an informal learning setting. This assignment will be submitted through WebCT as an attachment.
2. Participant submits a one page reflection about the workshop experience and how they plan to implement new techniques and strategies in their own classrooms. This should also be submitted as an attachment through WebCT.
