Description:
Bring your digital camera (or borrow one) and learn basic how-to’s of taking and effectively using digital photos. Learn how a digital camera works, take pictures, and practice transferring images from your camera (memory card) to your computer for editing. In addition, learn to use photo editing and digital storytelling software to quickly make “movies” from your images. Discover creative ideas and projects for you and your students that use the digital camera. Find some “real life” applications for all the digital pictures you have sitting on your computer at home. (FREE Picasa 2 and Photo Story 3 software is provided in class.)

Description: This is a colorful, magazine-size paperback book (112 pages). It features gear you need, new ways to photograph nature, family and vacations, 153 tips from the experts, a free poster and more. Advanced purchase is not necessary, just bring your $10.00 to class.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Understand how digital cameras work and be able to transfer the images from the camera to their computer.
  • Understand techniques for taking good photographs.
  • Be able to edit, enhance, and optimize images for print or web using Picasa photo-editing software.
  • Learn to craft and tell a digital story to enhance student learning using Photo Story 3 software.
  • Understand a variety of ways digital camera use can be integrated into their core curriculum and classroom practices.
  • Identify and develop a project-based experience for their students using digital cameras.

Things to bring:
Participants are encouraged to bring their own digital camera (Be sure to also bring the cables and software that came with the camera). UEN has three cameras participants may share during class.

Assignment:
Create a digital story. Between days one and two, spend about four hours taking photographs, storyboarding, and drafting a script. The digital story must demonstrate application of skills learned in class and should have an obvious connection to core curriculum or have a clear classroom application. Participants may be asked to share the core standard associated with their story during class.
